Exporting a car from the UK: a practical checklist
Moving abroad or selling overseas? What to do with DVLA, customs and shipping, and what to check at the destination.

Exporting a vehicle is simpler than importing one, but there are still a few steps to get right.
Before you book
- Check the destination rules. Some countries limit the age of imported cars, or need an import approval before the car ships.
- Gather your documents. You’ll need the V5C logbook and proof of ownership.
- Clear finance. You can’t export a car with outstanding finance on it.
The UK paperwork
An export declaration is made to HMRC, and DVLA is told the vehicle is permanently exported, so it comes off the UK register. We handle both.
Shipping
Container, RoRo or air freight, depending on value and urgency. For countries with strict biosecurity rules, such as Australia, the car must be spotlessly clean, so we arrange a pre-export clean.
At the destination
Import taxes and registration are handled under local rules. We work with agents in popular destinations to make this part smooth.
