FAQ

Customs: common questions.

Still have a question?

Talk to a real person who imports cars every day.

How much duty and VAT will I pay?

Cars built in Japan pay 0% duty under the UK–Japan trade agreement, plus 20% VAT. Most cars from other countries pay 10% duty and 20% VAT, calculated on the value plus shipping. Historic vehicles over 30 years old can qualify for 0% duty and 5% VAT. Your quote shows the exact figures.

What is NOVA?

NOVA is how HMRC is told that a vehicle has arrived in the UK. It must be done within 14 days, and DVLA won’t register the car without it. We file it for you.

I’m moving to the UK. Do I have to pay tax on my car?

Possibly not. If you’ve lived outside the UK for at least 12 months and owned and used the car for at least 6 months, you may qualify for Transfer of Residence relief.
